December

Sun 24th:

Merry Christmas to all our readers - a few more pictures of the Xmas Dinner Walk have been uploaded to the Photo Gallery page.

We hope to see you on January 1st for our short five mile walk south of Newton on Rawcliffe and on Saturday 6th Jan for our walk around Bransdale.

Sun 17th:

The Xmas Dinner Walk was very successful with 31 of us sitting down for dinner at The Mucky Duck at Newton on Rawcliffe. 22 of us walked the 8.5 miles prior to the dinner, Nigel led us over Stoney Moor, Cawthorne Moor and Cawthorne Camps before heading back to The Mucky Duck for 2.00 pm.

Nigel informs me that bookings for the St Cuthbert's Way 4 day break based at Melrose over Easter are going well. We now have 27 walkers sponsoring the group for 2007.

Thurs 14th:

By popular request the page structuring has been changed. Please use your back and forward buttons to move between pages. In most cases a new window will not open - most users seem to prefer this. Please note that will get better results if you view the page using Internet Explorer (IE) V7.  It's worth upgrading IE from V6 to V7 via the Microsoft web site as it contains some useful enhancements. Some users have had problems viewing the pages in Netscape and Firefox, and whilst I did use Firefox myself previously, I now use and recommend IE 7.

Sun 10th:

The new walking programme for January to June 2007 has been uploaded to the website. We intend to walk the St. Cuthbert's Way over the Easter weekend - full details can be obtained from Nigel. Phil's project for the year is to lead the group over the Tabular Hills regional trail from Scarborough to Helmsley - a total of 69 miles as we will be using public transport to make it a true linear walk with added interest. See the special webpage for this.

Sat 2nd:

The group is featured on page 34 of the current edition of the Pickering Beacon. Please click the Link to read the article. The Beacon webpage editor has already been complemented for her guile in stealing our logo and featuring it on the webpage !

Sat 25th:

Eight members and two dogs (Jeff and Levi), turned out on a very wet Castle Howard Walk and completed the 7.75 mile route. We were back in Pickering by 3.00pm. The day started wet but turned fine by 12.30pm at Easthorpe when we had our packed lunches. Pictured left to right are Dorothy, Trevor, Marie, Margaret and Norma. Phil (leader), Gill, Mary and the two dogs are out of the picture. Please click the Link to see our route.

Mon 13th:

A brief report just in from Nigel on last Saturday's walk north of Helmsley:

A bright and dry start to the day brought out a group of 16 walkers. The wind soon got up and the tree tops swayed as they headed into Riccal Dale with plenty of autumn colour on show for all to see. At the top of the valley the group turned to climb Cowhouse Bank, the only climb of the day, and lunch was enjoyed at the viewpoint. Rain came well into the afternoon as predicted but it didn't dampen the walkers spirits as they only had 3 miles left before finishing at the tearoom in Helmsley.

October

Thurs 25th:

Your walk leaders had a brainstorming session last night and have finalised the Winter 2006/Spring 2007 programme. This will released at the Xmas Dinner on December 10th. We also received some great news that an agreeable package has been arranged with a local service provider to provide minibus transport for walking trips when we need it. More details at the dinner, when a raffle will be held. (Donations of prizes would be much appreciated.)

Sat 21st:

Another good turn out for the walk around Sheriff Hutton led by Nigel & Alison.

We had walkers from Stamford Bridge, Scarborough, Pickering, Masham, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. The weatherman gave a bleak forecast, however it was dry all day but extremely clarty underfoot. We saw Mick Easterby's gallops and horses (well known racehorse trainer) at New House Farm, Sheriff Hutton Castle and finished up at the local in the village at 3.30pm for tea (yes, TEA!). We walked 9.1 miles and ascended 555 feet and finished up with very claggy boots!.

Sat 14th: Our figure of eight 7.5 mile walk around Appleton le Moors was well supported with sixteen walkers plus the famous Pip and Geoff (dogs), taking part. An early start meant were  finished and back in the village for 1.30 pm.

Alison says that the Xmas Dinner is now fully booked (28 walkers/diners). Nigel and Phil are currently working on the 2007 walking programme and have many ideas for an interesting year. Two short break walking holidays are being planned and a six day walk on a regional trail using public transport for access.

Tues 3rd: Alison tells me that bookings for the Xmas walk and dinner on 10th December are coming in fast, so if you want to be there please contact her via e-mail or (after 6.00 pm) on the phone number in the Autumn Programme.

September

Sat 30th: Phil and Judy led this one - a shorter walk of 7 miles which involved ascending Roseberry Topping and the Captain Cook Monument. The eleven walkers were back at Glebe House Tearoom by 2.45 pm saying that it had been an easier walk than they envisaged. We had our packed lunches at the top of Roseberry Topping.

Sun 24th: The walk around Staithes led by Nigel and Alison started wet, then sunny, until we hit the sea fret. We walked several little used paths and found that the bank leading down to Runswick Bay Sailing Club was extremely slippy. Fortunately the tide was out so that enabled us to reach the tearoom at Runswick Bay. Eleven walkers and twelve miles with many familiar faces!

Thurs 21st: The group got off to a great start with a short Thursday evening walk led by Nigel around Sinnington. Due to the nights drawing in the fourteen walkers only managed two miles before ending up at The Fox and Hounds pub.
