Ryedale Walking Group

What's New Oct 2007 - Jan 2008

Sunday Dec 16th - RWG Xmas Dinner Walk

Nigel led the group on a 9 mile circular walk around Rosedale, finishing for Xmas Dinner at the Milburn Arms. The maximum temperature was 2c and overcast but it was a splendid walk which will probably be repeated in the summer. There were numerous prizes in the raffle and a picture quiz. Steve from Helmsley was the winner - of a £10 gift voucher to be spent at Ryedale Rambler in Pickering, our local walking shop!

Saturday 1st December Fridaythorpe Wolds Walk

The Wolds are a favourite with our walk leader Nigel (2nd from right in photo), and fifteen of us enjoyed a good day taking in eight of the Dales and Wolds around Fridaythorpe. Sunny weather, some nice ascents and descents and a visit to Seaways Cafe just off the A166 in Fridaythorpe Village finished off a good days' walk:

Sunday 18th November - Langdale Rigg End 7.5 mile walk from The Moorcock

Sorry no pictures on this walk - I would say this was the wettest walk since the group came into being!

The phone started ringing as soon as I got up and by 8.30am we had 6 regulars cancelling after they had looked out and checked the weather forecast. I couldn't blame them, however as the leader and a martyr I had to turn out!

To cut a long story short, yes it was cold, it was wet, but in our waterproof gear we were not . It did sleet on top of Langdale Rigg End at 2c and the temperature was 3c at midday in Broxa Forest! The Derwent was in spate and so the 4 of us found the path alongside it pretty muddy (the 4 being Phil (Leader), Chas (from Holmfirth), Scarborough Sheila and Tess - Collie Dog). We were back in Pickering for 2.15pm and despite the rain we did stop for a coffee break and then later for our packed lunches. We weren't the only mad people enjoying the "great outdoors" either. We saw another two walking groups and several blokes on trials and quad bikes!

Sugar Loaf (Howden Hill)

I discovered on the route that Howden Hill (known locally as Sugar Loaf- above) is open access under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. So an ascent of that will be included for those who like to climb when we redo this walk. Remembering the Cricket Match on Blakey Topping!

This is an excellent walk and it be re-run in less inclement conditions, with hopefully a better turn out next time.

Sunday November 4th Cowhouse Bank & Riccal Dale

Our contingent of nine humans and two dogs left Cowhouse Bank car park at 9.40am on a beautiful autumn day with Phil as the leader. We headed south on the lane towards Carlton and then followed the Tabular Hills route across to Hasty Bank Farm. From here we went north to Howl Wood Farm, Coning's Birks, Old Fold and Helmsley Bank.

A late lunch was taken on the top of Helmsley Bank. We then followed the forestry track along the top of Cowhouse Bank, where logging operations are currently taking place, nicely opening up the view in places along this route. We were back in Pickering after our 7.35 mile walk by 2.15pm.

It was great to walk again with Mike from Scarborough, and David (now living in Pickering) who we hadn't seen out for several months.

The Tabular Hills webpage has been updated and has been moved to the archives section of the website. New pictures have been uploaded.

Thursday Oct 18th

Change to Programme

Due to white lining of the A1257 on Saturday 27th October the walk to be led by Sam in Bilsdale from Chop Gate will be run in 2008. Instead Sam will lead an 11 mile moderate circular walk north from Helmsley Bank. Meet at Pickering Pool 9.00am for car share or at Helmsley Bank (GR SE593903) at 9.20am.

Friday Oct 13th:

Sedbergh - eighteen of us (plus one guest on the Monday - John Cooley) enjoyed our second residential break of 2007 at HF Holidays Thorn's Hall Sedbergh. Five walks were undertaken led by Phil and Sam. On the Sunday the group was split into two between a moderate and strenuous walk.

On Saturday we enjoyed a walk around Sedbergh and the Rawthey Valley (6 miles). Sunday saw the "strenuous group" walk from The Crosskeys Inn up Cautley Spout to The Calf (2200 feet) and then back to Sedbergh (7.5 miles) whilst the "moderate group" walked along the flank of the Howgills from The Crosskeys Inn back to Sedbergh (7 miles). Day 3 took the group to Dent where we enjoyed a 7.5 mile walk around Dentdale taking in Flintergill, the Occupation Road and The Dales Way. After our walk we all visited the Heritage Centre and the nearby Meadowside Tearoom.

On Tuesday we tackled the classic 8 mile walk from Malham taking in Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn, Watlowes and Malham Cove, before a lovely meal at The Millstones Restaurant near Harrogate on our way home. The 3 pictures above are of Janet's Foss, the group in Gordale Scar and the Rawthey Valley near Sedbergh. Click them for a bigger picture.

Tues Oct 2nd:

The Cleveland Way 4

This is Judy, John, Jean and Phil completing The Cleveland Way at Filey this week. Along with others (who fell by the wayside) they started walking the route in June 2006. It took them 11 days spread over 15 months to complete the 110 mile route! These four are believed to be the first in RWG to complete this National Trail. The next challenge for them in 2008 is The 79 mile Wolds Way.
