Ryedale Walking Group

What's New April - June 2007

Late June was a busy period for walkers in the group with many key people away on holiday and some conducting recces on behalf of the group for future walking holidays planned for Sedbergh, Derbyshire and the Isle of Man. Alison & Nigel have also been busy (aren't they always) providing their leadership experience in helping to run a charity walk around Goathland on behalf of The Leprosy Mission. We have also been planning for the Active Ryedale Sports Festival at Kirkbymoorside on July 15th - when we will be promoting walking as a healthy, sociable pursuit to anyone interested in joining the group.

Booking slips are available for the Christmas Walk and Dinner which will be held this year at The Milburn Arms Rosedale on December 16th. Available on walks or by request - please note that numbers are limited.

In late June Nigel organised a minibus walk near Richmond which was well supported. Pictured are members of the group (Nigel & Colin not pictured):

In July as well as the Active Ryedale Festival on the 15th we are walking on the 7th in and around Mulgrave Woods, on the 14th we have Stage 4 of the Tabular Hills Route from Hole of Horcum to Cropton. We go to Ribblehead by bus to walk the viaduct on July 22nd (fully booked), when John (pictured front centre above) will lead a walk to Chapel-le-Dale and back. We return to Hole of Horcum on the 28th when Sam leads the walk. Don't forget the Thursday evening walks too, if you are local to Pickering. This quarterly "What's New" feature has now come to an end so please check the July-September page, when I have created it, for the latest news.

Best Regards and Happy Walking, Phil.

Sat 9th June:            Stage 3 Tabular Hills Walk from Allerston through to Hole of Horcum

Our staged walk of the Tabular Hills Route from Scarborough to Helmsley is proving popular and we had a good turnout for Stage 3. After last weeks incident with the fire brigade in the Cleveland Hills this weeks antics were even more bizarre. To celebrate Taff's 50th birthday we enjoyed a game of cricket on top of Blakey Topping !

Walking poles were used for stumps and Taff had brought along his own bat and ball !

The 128 and Coastliner buses were used to get to and from this walk reducing our carbon emissions - we hope the North Yorkshire Moors National Park Authority appreciate this.....

More pictures from the walk: (click for 640x480 size)

We arrived at Hole of Horcum with plenty of time to spare and enjoyed ice cream from the van. We restart this trail on Sat July 14th when we take the Coastliner bus to Hole of Horcum and return via the M50 Moorsbus from Cropton - let's hope we have a sunny day again and time for a drink at the Cropton Inn.

Sun 3rd                     Ryedale Walking Group calls out North Yorkshire Fire Brigade!

This picture was taken after Steve and Nigel had spoken with Fire Officers of North Yorkshire Fire Service from Northallerton, regarding a suspected moorland fire in an adjacent dale that they had observed from Carlton Bank. Having promptly reported the fire by mobile phone and on descending the hill, our dynamic duo met the fire crew at Lord Stones. After receiving directions and a grid reference the fire crew proceeded to the scene of the suspected blaze.

The weather was super once again on the 9.5 mile walk. Some members of the group can be seen here inspecting one of the boundary stones on Carlton Moor.

Sat 12th: Tabular Hills Regional Trail Stage 2

Another super turnout of 19 with most walkers taking the green option by catching the 128 bus from Kirkby/Pickering to Hutton Buscel. A 12 mile hike through Wykeham Forest brought us via Givendale Head to Allerston in time to catch the 3.20pm bus back to Pickering. The Scarborough contingent of Rick, Eric and Christine were lucky to catch a lift from Nigel and Alison back to town. We now have 13 walkers who have completed the first two stages of the Tabular Hills Trail. The next leg is on Sat June 9th, from Allerston to Givendale Head and thence on to The Hole of Horcum.  We then catch the Coastliner bus back to Pickering.

Picture 1 - The weather forecast both local and national gave "rain" and not a drop fell....

Picture 2 - Eric who has a great interest in Geology, gives an off the cuff lecture to our walking group on how the unique rock formations in this area of Wykeham forest were formed.

Picture 3 - Phil and John look north from the Wykeham Forest viewpoint and plan a future walk over Langdale End.

Sat 15th: The Tabular Hills Walk Stage 1

                                        (Click for a bigger picture)

Tabular Hills Stage 1 - numbers were reduced with some of our regular walkers having other commitments, however at least 6 more members will be doing the walk in early May - Phil will again lead, so if you want to walk it and missed out and can make it on that day, then let me know. Stage 2 on May 12th is from Hutton Buscel (to rejoin the link at Wykeham) through to Givendale Head and then down to Allerston (Cayley Arms). On Stage 1 we welcomed Rick from Scarborough as our 50th paid up member, and it was great to see Mike from Scarborough with us for his first walk of 2007.

The group of 15 left the Sea Life Centre at 10.40 and made it through to Wykeham by 15.30. The tearoom was closed but we had plenty of time to enjoy a pint or a pot of tea at The Downe Arms, before we boarded the 16.05 bus back home. A flat 11 mile route apart from the stretch up to Wykeham Forest from Wrench Green which rises up 400 feet in less than half a mile. This was an easier than many thought on the day, although it was hot and most walkers had a good sweat on. A fair amount of tarmac roads on this route, but this is a necessary part of the walk.

Thurs 12th:                                            Isle of Man Walking Festival

Phil & Judy are going to the IoM by ferry for this one week event from June 24th-30th. All the walking will be led by Manx Walkers. If any of the group are interested in coming please contact Phil who will co-ordinate shared transport (either by minibus or car) and accommodation. 42 walks of differing grades including a five day coastal path walk covering the whole Island. All welcome !

More info - click the map.

Weds 11th:
