Ryedale Walking Group

What's New July - Sept 2007

Sunday 30th Sept:

Our Rievaulx Moor circular walk north of Helmsley proved popular on a lovely sunny day. The route took us across the moor to the trig point (see picture below) then south to High Baxton's Farm before heading west back to the B1257. After lunch we made our way back along Ryedale to Newgate Bank Car park.

Sunday 16th Sept:

15 walkers enjoyed a 13 mile walk around the Yorkshire Coast and inland to Killerby where the Stained Glass Centre Tearoom was visited. The Cleveland Way was more crowded than usual - the QE2 was on her final cruise before being taken out of service. We got a terrific view of her from North Cliff as she steamed North from Flamborough to Scarborough:

Tuesday 11th Sept:

Walk Leaders Nigel and Phil today completed the "Heartstart" course with doctors and nursing staff from Pickering Surgery and Scarborough Hospital. The course was run in conjunction with the Scarborough Group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. We hope these new found basic first aid skills will not be required on future walks!

Stage 6 Tabular Hills Walk (Final Stage) on Saturday 8th September:

Scarborough  Helmsley

70 mile walk using public transport

17 walkers completed the 11 mile walk at a moderate pace from Gillamoor to Helmsley, followed by a fish and chip supper at a cafe in Kirkbymoorside. From the 17 walkers these 7 will be awarded certificates at our Christmas Dinner at Rosedale on December 16th for completing the 70 mile route over 6 days:

John - Jean - Nigel (Walk Leader) - Alison - Phil (Walk Leader) - Judy - Dorothy

The group left Gillamoor at 11.15am and arrived in Helmsley at 5.15pm. The hard climb up Riccal Dale was the "sting in the tale" and readers will be interested to know that we will do this one mile climb again on 4th November when we tackle Cowhouse Bank as well (You have been warned!). Although the seven walkers above completed 70 miles only 48 of it was actually on the walk - with another 22 miles walking from the bus stops along the A169 and A170 roads to the start and finish points. Not the easiest way but certainly the greenest way to tackle this excellent linear walk.

This is the rest of the group from Sundays walk near Hasty Bank:

Evening Walk on Thursday 6th September:

This short walk turned into a record breaker for the group with 24 walkers - we put this down to the excellent September weather:

Cropton Walk Sunday 2nd Sept:

No pictures I'm afraid as no one had a camera!  However I do have a picture on Geograph of Fall Rigg taken from Kelton Banks where we started our walk, please follow the link:

View across Fall Rigg to Spaunton Moor

So, ten of us walked North of Cropton and were led by Pauline on a walk of just over 8 miles. We must have kept up a good pace as we were back in Pickering by 1.45pm, despite having a half hour lunch stop. Quite a few familiar faces were conspicuous by their absence due to holidays away, but we did recruit Hilary as a new member!

Tues 28th Aug:                                  1st Annual Challenge Walk

The 18 participants in the 17 mile Challenge Walk on August Bank Holiday Monday from Goathland to Pickering:

(Thank you to Gill for taking the picture near The Mallyan Spout Hotel)

Eighteen of us alighted from the Yorkshire Coastliner bus at Goathland at 10.15am - with sixteen of us intending to walk the full 17 miles back to Pickering - where we caught the bus from earlier in the day. The remaining two walkers being happy to settle for the 11 miles across the Moors to Lockton where we all enjoyed a tearoom halt at 3.45pm, and let's not forget the 3 dogs who also made the full distance!

Most of us were hungry and very thirsty at the end of the day, so we finished off in The Royal Oak in Pickering at 6.45pm for drinks and a pub meal - what an end to a great day's walking! Phil even made a short film of part of the walk - click No.4 the icon above to watch it (Recommended for Broadband users with Quicktime installed.)

On reaching Pickering our walk leader Nigel surprised the group by awarding laminated certificates to the 16 walkers who completed the full distance!

Sun 26th August :

The 5th stage of the Tabular Hills Walk was well supported last week with 11 walkers. We started from Cropton and walked via Hutton le Hole and Gillamoor to Kirkbymoorside:

These pictures taken near Appleton Mill Farm, show the reconstructed footbridge over the River Seven and some charcoal burners nearby. Seven walkers have completed all 5 stages of the Tabular Hills Walk from Scarborough to Helmsley so far and they all hope to finish it on Stage 6 in Helmsley on September 8th.

The evening walk last Thursday (23rd) attracted 14 walkers including Teddy, a visitor from Denmark who stopped off in Pickering on his way to the Isle of Man. Phil led a lovely walk north of Middleton taking in Shop Lane, Beadale Valley Woods, then returning via Middleton Lane passing the Leas Hotel and Restaurant. The last evening walk of the year will be led by Nigel from the Castle on Thursday 6th Sept at 6.30pm.

Tues 14th August:

Nigel, Alison & Phil on Sun 5th August 2007 above Wooler (Judy took the photo)

Several Ryedale Walking Group Members started walking the St Cuthbert's Way in April 2006 as part of another walking group. Nigel and Alison are the first to finish it! Last weekend they went up to Wooler with Phil & Judy, who started walking the St Cuthbert's Way in April 2007.  The Wildsmiths climbed Yeavering Bell (Hill Fort) from Hethpool on the Saturday, and then walked the section from Wooler to St Cuthbert's Cave on the Sunday. Meanwhile, the Catteralls completed the 23 mile section from Hethpool to Holy Island Causeway over two days. Phil and Judy are to return next month and complete the 63 mile walk by doing the section from Kirk Yetholm to Hethpool.

Sat 28th July:

With the usual walk leaders away on holiday Sam took over as leader on a walk from The Hole of Horcum on what was a lovely day:

The pictures show how the North Yorkshire Moors bracken is coming on, now that we head towards August. Skelton Tower can tell a few stories. Our rail fan John captured the nice sharp picture of the diesel in Newtondale in the valley below it.

Sun 22nd July:                                            Ribblehead Viaduct Walk

Our group had a once in a lifetime chance to walk over the great Ribblehead Viaduct. The event was oversubscribed and out of the 2000 available tickets we got 20. This is the group after the momentous walk:

There was plenty to see and do around Ribblehead Railway Station and we met some famous people - Mike Harding entertainer and various BBC presenters and weathermen. The event made National TV and Newspapers. Thanks go to the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Railway and Network Rail for allowing the chosen few the chance to walk the historical monument. It's certainly a day I will never forget.

Once we had finished the short walk over the viaduct John Stewart led the group on a 7 mile walk to Chapel le Dale, returning on the flank of Whernside. John received a deserving vote of thanks from the group after we had enjoyed our fish and chips in Thirsk.

Sat 21st July: Our Walk Leaders attended the Active Ryedale Festival at Kirkbymoorside. The event was sponsored and promoted by Ryedale District Council. We flew the flag for walking in the district, along with many other sports that were being promoted on the day.

Weds 18th July:  Our community transport partner Ryecat is now a member of The Little Red Bus network who have a new website at: http://www.littleredbus.co.uk/

Sat 14th July Stage 4 Tabular Hills Walk:

Coffee break at Dundale Pond                                  The Waterwheel at Farwath

Our 4th stage of the Tabular Hills Walk took us from The Hole of Horcum to Cropton via Levisham, Farwath and Cawthorne. The group used the Ryecat Minibus on this occasion - Moorsbus doesn't start it's Saturday service until July 21st. It was a fine day for the eight walkers who completed the 14 mile stage to Cropton.

Sat 7th July: Mulgrave Woods (9 miles) :

We had a great walk from Sandsend led by Brenda, who used her local knowledge to explore many of the permissive paths not shown on maps in Mulgrave Woods. The day was mostly fine, however, as the last picture shows, whilst taking cream teas in The Bridge Tearooms garden at Sandsend the heavens opened. Click the photos for a bigger view.
