Sunday 18th May 2008

Our first walk to be featured on the Walking Britain Website is now live. This is the Lealholm walk that we did on May 4th. Please follow the link.

Saturday 17th May 2008

Twelve of us travelled over to Ripon to walk the second stage of the Ripon Rowel walk from South Stainley to Sawley. More info on the Ripon Rowel Webpage. After the nine mile walk we enjoyed tea and cakes made for us by the WI at Sawley Village Hall and then an audio/visual presentation and talk by David Rodway on the regeneration of Hackfall Wood near Grewelthorpe.

Saturday 10th May Pateley Bridge Walk

Pauline led the group on a super 9 mile walk from Pateley Bridge, taking in some worked out quarries. The weather was hot for May and the visit to the pub near the end of the walk was most welcome:

Sat 10th May

The Editor of the Walking Britain website Lou Johnson, has agreed to feature some of our North Yorkshire walks on his website. Please keep an eye on the site over the coming weeks for some of the walks you may have completed with Ryedale Walking Group over the last year.

Sun 28th April

17 of us travelled to Ribblesdale for the first of our three trips this year to ascend "The Three Peaks". Whernside was our first climb - the "Everest of Yorkshire" at 2416 feet. 13 intrepid members went to the top. We started our walk at 11.00am and despite this being the highest mountain in Yorkshire, the group found it relatively easy, arriving at the summit by 1.15pm.

John S led us north on a route from Ribblehead to the aqueduct over the Settle-Carlisle railway line, and then onwards and upwards across the top to the summit and trig point. Phil, the only radio ham in the group, set up his radio station for 15 minutes and quickly made some contacts - Whernside counts towards the "Summits On The Air" (SOTA) award scheme.  As the picture above shows there is plenty of shelter on the top, which is where we had our lunch. Our route down was via the stepped path to Bruntscar, where we had a great view of our next challenge - Ingleborough (2376 feet), to be tackled by the group in July.

Sat 19th April

Stage One

Ripon Rowel from North Bridge Ripon to South Stainley, eleven miles and eleven walkers tackled it - the first of five walks on our 50 mile trail around Ripon led by Nigel. A stroll through Ripon (avoiding the many instances of dog poo on the pavements - disgusting) led us to the cathedral for a photocall:

We were soon out of the town and walking the banks of The Ripon Canal. The canal lock leading the boaters on to the River Ure was extremely busy. We soon left the water to walk south through the villages of Bishop Monkton (lunch stop) and Burton Leonard. Our final destination was the watering hole of The Red Lion at South Stainley, where our three drivers were collected by Margaret (Thanks to her!), for transit back to the start of the walk. The Drivers (Phil, Doug and Jill) then returned to The Red Lion to collect the main group. The 2nd leg from South Stainley to Sawley taking in Markinfield Hall, Studley Park and Fountains Abbey is on Sat 17th May.

Sunday 27th January 2008 in the Howardian Hills AONB

Owing to the flooding in the Vale of York it was decided to run the Newton on Ouse and Beningbrough Hall walk later in the year so Pauline agreed to lead of us on a 9.5 mile walk circular from Welburn, taking in Bulmer, Ganthorpe, Coneysthorpe and Castle Howard Estate. After poor weather for several days this was a good day and 24 walkers turned out. We welcomed new members David & Jill from Driffield:

Ryedale Walking Group in the news 16th January 2008

INVITATION TO STEP OUT ON WEEKLY RAMBLES

New members are invited to join Ryedale Walking Group.

Formed in September 2006, the group now has 50 people, of all ages and professions, on its books who take part in a weekly walk around North Yorkshire and further afield.

Co-founder Phil, of Pickering, said: “It’s a very social thing. I’m not a member of the gym culture but being out in the countryside is a great way to keep fit, especially for me because I spend a lot of time sitting in the office. The good thing about walking is you can eat what you like because you tend to walk it off.” Phil and his wife Judy started the group after becoming friends with fellow founders Nigel and Alison while walking with another club.

“The thoughts behind the group were that we are keen to encourage car sharing,” said Mr Catterall. “It cuts CO2 emissions. We also use buses quite a lot and we are members of Ryecat, who have a rural miles scheme.” And he added that it was a cheap form of exercise too – with the only costs coming from a £3 annual subscription fee and equipment. “The gear doesn’t cost much, apart from a descent pair of boots, a good waterproof coat and possibly a walking pole. But I have just worn out a pair of walking boots that I bought in 2000, which must have done a couple of thousand miles.”

While mainly choosing walks around the county, the group is also preparing rambles in Derbyshire, West Yorkshire and the Isle of Man. It will also tackle the three peaks of Yorkshire and the 50-mile Ripon Rowel route in a series of stages. People can also take their dogs.

Future walks include: Sunday, January 27: a nine-and-a-half mile easy walk near Newton-on-Ouse; Saturday, February 9: a nine mile easy walk around Kirkbymoorside; and Saturday, February 23: a seven-and-a-half mile moderate walk around Goathland.

Anyone interested in joining the group should call (01751) 476380 or 475109.

13th January

Our first proper walk of 2008 was an 11.5 miler from Hole of Horcum and across Saltersgate Bank. 15 walkers turned out and new members Martin, Owen and Jenni were welcomed on their first walk with the group. It was a fine wind free day but wet underfoot as we made our way down to Malo Cross. From here we walked north to the Fylingdales Permissive Bridleway - thanks go to the MoD for opening this route up to walkers, horse riders and cyclists:

The group about to walk down the permissive bridleway at RAF Fylingdales

From the rear of the RAF base we crossed Eller Beck to climb up the moorland across Lilla Rigg. No path is mapped here but it is possible to reach the track at SE 872977 <link> and walk to Lilla Cross from there. This is a far better route across the Moor than the Lyke Wake path further north. This path gets extremely waterlogged at this time of year. Lunch was enjoyed at Lilla Cross where the group were told why this ancient Christian monument was sited on the North Yorkshire Moors in the 7th century AD. Our return south was via Langdale Forest passing the head of the River Derwent, Blakey Topping and down to Newgate Foot, where we climbed the 330 foot Newgate Bank to return to the Hole of Horcum. You can see our route on The Walking Britain Website
