If you are interested in the 5 day walking holiday in Patterdale planned for September please contact Phil for or Judy for further details. 22nd Nov 2008 Thirteen walkers enjoyed a 9 mile walk in the Howardian Hills walking through the five hamlets of Dalby, Scackleton, Whenby, Stearsby and Skewsby on a sunny dry day. Nigel captured this fantastic picture of a Robin in close up, which reminded us Christmas was just round the corner: Image by Nigel Wildsmith produced under ccl licence all rights reserved 9th Nov 20088
As well as the 10% discount already given to Ryedale Walking Group members by Ryedale Rambler (Pickering) and by Wray's Trek & Ski (Helmsley) we now enjoy the same discount (strictly on production of your membership card) at Crag and Moor Outdoor Shop in Victoria Road Scarborough. 8th Nov 2008 On a fine day after overnight rain, 21 Ryedale Walkers tackled an excellent but muddy walk from Rudston, in deepest East Yorkshire, an area most of us were not familiar with. We made for St Andrews Church at Boynton, where Nigel had arranged a much enjoyed guided tour with Mr Mike Mortimore. We were allowed to eat our lunch inside the church by special invitation. After lunch we made our way back north via bridleways and footpaths to Rudston Monolith and Church. The Group near Boynton Hall After the walk David and Jill, who farm nearby, treated us all to home made soup, followed by delicious home made apple pie and tea. We were all very grateful for this wonderful hospitality. 19th Oct 2008: Sam led the group on a 10.5 mile walk from Sandsend. Mulgrave Woods and Castle were visited, with a break at Lythe Church and Kettleness:

21st September 2008 16 walkers enjoyed a 12.5 mile walk from Thixendale led by Pauline. This was a special walk on our programme to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Ryedale Walking Group. A cake was ordered from the WI: Nigel - founder walk leader cutting the birthday cake The walk was challenging, taking in the Wolds valleys and ascents of Thixendale, Milham Dale, Hanging Grimston Wold, Acklam Wold, Leavening Brow with lunch at Burythorpe. The climb of Birdsall Brow onto Toisland Wold just about finished us off. We finished with a short section of the Wolds Way and the Centenary Way before we ate our well deserved cake in Thixendale Village Hall. Thanks go to the WI for a delicious cake! 21st August 2008 Walkers intending to complete Stage 5 of the Ripon Rowel on September 13th can find a detailed walk description on the Walking Britain Website - Walk Description Leg 5 - Grewelthorpe to Ripon 12th August 2008 The final Stage 5 leg of the Ripon Rowel from Grewelthorpe to Ripon takes place on September 13th - group members may like to view the walk description for Stage 4 which is now on the Walking Britain Website. 11th August 2008 Steve (from Helmsley), led the group on one of his favourite local walks north of the town to Rievaulx, returning via the grounds of Duncombe Park on permissive paths. Most of the group walked nine miles, however Dorothy and Steve walked an extra mile up the hill and back in Duncombe Park, to inspect the ice house. Meanwhile the remaining fourteen walkers headed off to Pat and Steve's house where a surprise impromptu "summer social" with tea and cake was much enjoyed. We were all very grateful for this at the end of a pleasant and very informative walk. The Group are pictured leaving Helmsley at the start of the walk >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

| 2nd August 2008 Last Saturdays good weather brought out 19 walkers for the 4th stage of our Ripon Rowel Walk, from Ilton to Grewelthorpe and led by Nigel. The transport using car sharing, took some working out. Thanks go to Margaret who ferried the five drivers at the end of the walk back to their cars near Ilton. The hot day meant we ran out of water, despite a pleasant late lunch stop en-route in Masham. The Crown Inn at Grewelthorpe was still closed at 5.30pm, so we had to wait until later to enjoy a cool drink! More info on the Ripon Rowel Webpage. The Stage 4 route details are now here on the Walking Britain website. 22nd July 2008 Nigel led a great 9 mile walk from Hutton le Hole on a sunny Sunday over Spaunton Moor, up to Ana Cross and then down to Lastingham before returning to Hutton le Hole for tea and cakes at Andrew and Mary's house, raising funds for Hutton le Hole Parish Church. The group come down off the Moors with Mavis & Alison leading HOT NEWS: If you are in the market for a new set of boots Ryedale Rambler in Pickering are giving away a free Gelert Boot Bag with every pair of boots sold over £50. This is in addition to the 10% discount available to members of Ryedale Walking Group (on production of membership card). It is not known how long this offer is available.......Regards, Phil 10th July 2008 The 6 mile evening walk from Pickering Pool led by Doug, was well supported despite the wet weather. Everyone got a good soaking when the heavens opened up half way through the walk on footpaths to the south of Pickering. Let's hope the weather improves soon! Sat-Sun July 5th & 6th Ingleborough Weekend Ten members braved the stormy weather to tackle Ingleborough, most of whom are tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks this year (Whernside was in March, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent next in October). Ingleborough was tougher than Whernside and involved us walking 13 miles with more than 2300' of ascent. We started the walk from Clapham at 10.10 and finished it at 1650 hrs. The weather was "fair to middling" for the first 30% of the time, foul for the 30% around lunchtime when we were on the summit, and perfect for the last 40%, which enabled us to dry off. We just made it to the minibus in time, before the heavens opened again. The walks were led by Phil and we had a hearty meal at The Dog and Gun in Carlton Miniott, Thirsk on the way home.

Our nine members returned safely from the Isle of Man Walking Festival last Saturday having had a calm crossing of the Irish Sea to Heysham. The trip across the previous Sunday in a Force 9 gale we won't mention! With views like these it's not surprising that some of us are planning to return in 2009, and are thinking about flying next time! Click the thumbnail to increase the size of the image
Sat 28th June 2008 Whilst other members were returning from the Isle of Man Walking Festival Sam led a group of walkers from Chop Gate on a challenging walk on the west side of Bilsdale:(Click thumbnail for larger image) Sat 14th June 2008 Fourteen walkers enjoyed an easy 8 mile walk around Slingsby and South Holme - a contrast from some of the more demanding walks of late.
We completed the walk by 1.30pm after the usual 9.00am Pickering Pool meet, leaving some of the group to enjoy the 60's weekend and classic car run through Pickering later that day! Jan-May 2008 What's New Archive is here
