April - June 2009
The Group in Cumbria on a walk to see Long Meg & her daughters en-route to Moffat Easter 2009 April and May was a busy period for the group with walks in the Wolds, the North York Moors, and around North Yorkshire outside the National Park. The Easter walking break in the Borders at Moffat was an unqualified success and nineteen of us enjoyed good weather throughout the long weekend. Members have been active in their own right walking the Cumbrian Way, at the Isle of Man Walking Festival, walking in Northern Ireland and four of us attended the celebration of the 40th year of The Cleveland Way National Trail by walking the first stage between Helmsley and Sutton Bank. The fortnightly Thursday evening walks started on April 16th and have once again proved popular. 19 members walked the first stage of the Lyke Wake Walk with Martin - the next stage is from Clay Bank to Danby Head on June 21st. On the 2nd April our constitution was updated and adopted at a meeting of 25 members. Resulting from that a committee of seven members were elected. We now have a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and four committee members. Our walks in March/early April - Kirkbymoorside, Levisham, Muston and Castleton were all popular with an average of seventeen walkers turning out. We were lucky with the weather and during the month we welcomed several new members to the group. 2nd April 2009 Dales weekend on Yorkshire Day August 1/2nd staying at The Craven Heifer near Skipton. Saturday - walk around Rylstone Cross , Cracoe Fell and Hetton. Sunday it's Wharfedale - Great Whernside and Starbotton from Kettlewell. See Phil for full details and to book. March 15th 2009 Walk leader Nigel briefs the group at the start of the Levisham Walk on March 15th 24th February 2009 The very wet ground conditions around Battersby meant this walk was rerouted to the high ground north of Kildale. Martin and Penny (once again) led 13 walkers on an enjoyable walk. It was a good dry day and the 7 miles were completed with ease, before retiring to one of our favourite Tearooms near the start - Glebe Cottage Kildale, for home made cakes and tea. Martin Themed
Stained Glass Captain Cook ooooooOOOOOOoooooo 7th February 2009 Goathland walk in the snow - led by Martin
Thirteen of our hardiest souls made their way to Goathland - most of them via the Coastliner bus, which due to snow and icing conditions, had to stop short of "Aidensfield" village to allow the walkers to get off at the railway station. The estimated temperature with wind chill on the walk was -5c however the group still managed to complete a six mile walk - part of the time in falling snow and returned to Goathland in time to catch the half past one Coastliner bus back to Pickering. Thanks go to Martin for leading this walk - his first as a leader with our group. 6th February 2009 NEW! We are grateful to York CTC who allow us access to their Webpages detailing recommended tearooms around North Yorkshire. Use the teapot link on the left hand menu on this page or from our Home Page to access the list. 4th February 2009 Check out the new 2008 picture gallery at: Ryedale Walking Group 2008 January Walks Nigel led an intrepid group of 21 walkers from Newgate Bank, Bilsdale on the 10th in bitter cold weather. A hoar frost, wind chill and severe icing conditions were in evidence all day and out of 19 walkers 4 of us fell on the ice, luckily without injury: Newgate Bank & Roppa Edge Click on thumbnails to open the 640x480 images in a new window Phil led the next one on January 25th, no ice just lots of mud for the 19 strong group on this 9 mile walk in the Howardian Hills from Hovingham, over Baxton Howe and the recently felled (and very muddy) Fryton Wood. Wath quarry was seen at close quarters before we retreated to Hovingham Bakery to take advantage of tea and cake at the end of our walk: Howardian Hills Walk from Hovingham via Baxton Howe, Fryton Woods and Wath Click on thumbnails to open the 640x480 images in a new window

As we move into the New Year we can look ahead briefly at what plans we have made for 2009:
1st January 2009 New Year's Day Walk in Dalby Forest What a great start to 2009! We realised that this was by far our most successful New Years Day Walk yet when twenty one members showed up. This year silly hats were requested to be worn and most people joined in:
Click the thumbnail to increase the size of the photo An enormous variety of hats were worn on this walk which was led by Phil and Judy. From the Fox & Rabbit we walked through woodland from the rear of the pub and down the valley to High Dalby House. We then climbed Littledale by the track on to Stoneclose Rigg where we had a half way coffee break. We passed some ginger pigs (seen above). After coffee we headed over Sneverdale Rigg to bring us out at the "Go Ape" amenity which was not in use on New Year's Day. Our re-ascent up to the pub took us across the rickety old footbridge (seen above) to rejoin our original path in High Wood. This short half day walk featured almost 800 feet of ascent. One walker commented that this was far from an easy walk despite the short distance of 5 miles! We were back at the Fox & Rabbit by 4.00pm - well before it became dark.
