Pickering became a Walkers are Welcome Town in June 2009 Walking Weekend planned for 3rd & 4th October - full details here Wharfedale Weekend August 2009 Saturday - 6.6 mile walk over Cracoe Fell (508m/1666')
Saturday started out wet so we lingered a while over coffee at The Craven Heifer, where we stayed Saturday night. After a boggy walk over the moor via Rylstone Cross we enjoyed our lunch amongst the rocks in the dry on Cracoe Fell. After descending we finished up at the Tearoom and Farmshop in Cracoe Village itself. Sunday - 10 mile walk from Kettlewell over Great Whernside (704m/2310') Sunday was the better day for the longer walk so we drove up to Kettlewell to collect our packed lunches from Zarina's Tea Shop in the village. Our target was a ten mile walk taking in Great Whernside. We walked up via Hag Dike and after a steep scramble we reached the top at 1.00pm to eat our lunches. Our route then was down via Tor Dike and on to Starbotton. We finished the walk along the Dales Way which runs along the River Wharfe to Kettlewell:

From left to right: We reached Kettlewell at 4.00pm and made for Zarina's Teashop again before driving back to Pickering via Carlton Miniott where we had a pub meal at The Dog and Gun, a pub we normally use on our way back from walking in the Yorkshire Dales.
